Meppershall, Bedfordshire
Residential

Meppershall is a hilltop village in Bedfordshire near Shefford and is surrounded by farmland. The village and the manor house are mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.

The proposed development at Bandland Nurseries takes references from the more historic buildings in Meppershall. In particular the honey coloured brickwork, brick lintols and stone or brick sills, multi-pane windows and simple doors with canopies or porches.

The proposed development was designed to sit comfortably within the existing settlement. The density of the existing village was analysed to ensure that the proposed urban grain fitted into the village. Care was taken to ensure that the architecture was appropriate for its location.

There were a number of pre-application meetings with the local authority and parish council. The design team and developer worked very hard with the local community and neighbouring residents to achieve  a design that was acceptable to everyone.

The site slopes southwards from the point of access and the layout is characterised by a linear park sweeping from this access down to the southern open space and countryside beyond.
