Street Farm, owned by A & C Gaotham and Son, has been associated with the storage and packing of top fruit for many years. Recently this operation has expanded and re-located to Flanders Farm. This site was not within the village boundary. Our Client was very keen to produce an attractive design of medium density. Our approach was to study the growth of the village from 1600 to present day and then to show how our proposal would be an appropriate and logical continuation of this growth. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1610630794603{padding-bottom: 10px !important;}"] Client Innasol Task Preparation of a Detailed Planning Application [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] Role Architect [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height="20px"][vc_column_text]The challenge was to design and achieve planning consent for a new oak-framed barn and to convert a stable block into office space on a prominent site just outside Maldon in Essex. The new barn is adjacent to a listed building and the stable block is part of the barn’s listed environs. In addition to the sensitive design required on this site, a change of use from agricultural to commercial was required. Our Client was very keen to produce an attractive design of medium density. Our approach was to study the growth of the village from 1600 to present day and then to show how our proposal would be an appropriate and logical continuation of this growth. A number of conservation areas in the borough were studied and townscape references were taken from them and adapted for inclusion in our masterplan. Planning Consent was granted in early 2013. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1467123990590{padding-bottom: 10px !important;}"] Client Mersea Homes and Hill (Residential) [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] Role Vision Statement, before preparing OPA [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height="20px"][vc_column_text]The Vision Statement sets out the masterplan, its parameters and the thinking behind the masterplan. This includes analysis of the site, its surroundings and local villages, architectural references, landscape and materials. It was used at pre-application meetings and as a design brief for Mersea Homes and Hill (Residential) along with the consultant team. The site is surrounded by residential development and the challenge was to create a development that would fit seamlessly into the neighbourhood, whilst also creating a unique sense of place. This was achieved through studies of local conservation areas and replicating some of the scale and character of these places.
